Honestly, it made no sense to me to develop something like this in parallel with the C7 - and if it is announced its debut would be only a few years after the Stingray's debut. And the price point mentioned in the article is so out of GM’s wheelhouse it’s absurd. But maybe this was some exec’s pet project so it’s getting green-lighted now? Maybe? Allegedly? *ponders*

well, they have the lambo level of terrible CGI, so perhaps they know what they are doing

That has been rumored for about 50 years.
As you said , it would make even less sense right now: the timing is off (the C7 was just launched), they already have a world-beating halo car (Z06) and they have more important fish to fry (their SUVs and trucks, which is what makes money, need some updates.)
So no, that won’t happen anytime soon.
Although they could just pull a Ford GT competitor out of thin air and prove me wrong... but I doubt it.

It is. The Corvette is already mid engine.
Just because it’s front mid doesn’t mean it doesn’t count.

while there’s been chatter that any mid-engine supercar project could be branded a Cadillac
That’s the only way I’d see this to make sense at this point. Cadillac needs a sports car, not just sport sedans and sport coupes but like an honest to god sports car. Much like every one of their other rivals if they wish to be taken seriously. or... I dunno I just want to see Cadillac get what should have been before... Even if it doesn’t have a sweet Northstar derived V12.

Frankly I consider the Z06 a GT competitor. Especially we’re talking C7R and GT racers.

There is something mid-engined running around Detroit that isn’t the GT. These spy shots are a year or two old now at this point.

if I were the (new) General, I’d be less worried about the fabulously expensive, limited production GT than the cheaper (than the ‘vette), better sounding, maybe faster and certainly better finished GT350-R. And if they continue to make the Camaro the default Mustang fighter both the Better Camaro (SS/RS/GTRS/Whatever) AND the Mustang will cannibalize 'vette sales.

OH! I’ve seen that but I just noticed it has a Cadillac ish grill!

I have never understood all the demand for a mid-rear engine corvette. The current car is technically a mid engine car but in the front instead of behind the driver. The car is already a world class perfomance car and , while i still hate the C7s looks, the quality has been greatly improved to go against the big guys. I honestly don't see the gain for completely throwing the corvette heritage out the window to conform to the other super cars makes

I think it kinda looks Holdenish but whatever it is, that is definitely a preproduction testing something.

watch joke is on us all, it’s actually just a mule for the next malibu... haha

Don't be pedantic; nobody ever said front-mid didn't count. When folks think of mid-engine they picture it behind the driver.

As much as I’d love to see this happen. I will believe it as soon as I see Sasquatch drive it out onto the debut stage.

A Ford GT competitor would be great! But why call it a Corvette? That’s almost as bad as using the name “Lumina” for both a car and a minivan at the same time.
![]() 02/26/2016 at 16:02 |

Sure it is, based on performance. Is there some mystic quality of (rear) mid-engine sports cars that elevates them to mythic status? I can't figure what the justification for this would be, other than absurdly expensive halo car.

Bil works at gm. Its happening!

I really don’t get that. It makes it more expensive and takes away it’s underdog status that makes it so awesome. I mean, if Porsche had decided to make the 911 a rear mid layout when everyone else went that way, why would the 911 be special? It’s the same here. The Corvette is much cheaper than it’s main rivals, and sits there doing what people thought you needed to go rear mid to do.
The Corvette (and the 911) is a giant poke in the eye to the rear mid culture and needs to stay that way.
Another point—IF this did make it into production, it wouldn’t be a Corvette. It should not share the Corvette name. The same way a rear mid car branded as a 911 would never be able to survive, even if the same car would be a hit called, say, the 912.

I’m thinking mainly of the articles that say “GM has reached the limit of what can be done with a front engined layout” every time a new one comes out. Yes they have, that’s why it’s not front engined. It’s just a load of misinformation.
I’ll be pedantic if I want to, thanks. I quite enjoy it :)

hey so were the last gen Camaro’s and Firebirds. Gm’s has don’t tons of Mid engine cars hahaha.. I too like being pedantic

because the new one’s aren’t over heating enough!! I demand they move the engine behind the driver so we can see more overheating corvettes...

Mid-engined Malibu SS... I’d take that. Return to the old GM way of putting a huge engine in the most ridiculous place.

I think I’m in the minority here, but I think all rear-mid cars look worse than they would if they were front-mid. Just look at the Corvette renders and then look at the C7.

I’m sure a Z/28 is coming down the pipes. The thing is though, pony cars have such a deep-seated brand loyalty that I doubt many people cross-shop them.
![]() 02/26/2016 at 16:31 |

THIS. A Corvette is a front-mid giant slayer. You want to make a rear-mid car and call it Zora, that’s fine. But don’t call it Corvette for the sake of keeping the Corvette name on top of the HP hill.

These surfaced before last year’s NAIAS Ford GT reveal. Funny because the auto press was caught flat-footed by the GT since Ford had the perfect “skin” for their test mule (the previous GT), whereas GM had nothing of the kind and did this. The only speculation was, “Will it be a Caddy, a Vette, or both?”

Is that an Opel front clip?

I will agree with you there that the rear engine renders are ugly but I'm not the one to talk about the C7 good looks because I think the car is the ugliest corvette Chevy had built.

Turbo mid engine (duh) starts at 125000. Been taking apart ferraris and lambos to see what makes em tick for over a year now. Still deciding on how much carbon fiber to use which is big news for gm.

Caddy to come out a year after vette.

Yeah, I think it is! Part of the “charade?” LOL
![]() 02/26/2016 at 17:09 |

I hope it’s “both.” The speculation at the time was that manufacturing cost uplift from the FMR C7 to a RMR C8 would only be about $5k because of the transmission. I mean, after the C7, can you imagine a “true” mid-engine Vette? I’m a Ford fanboi and the thought makes even me downright giddy!
